How to Choose the Right Wheelchair
What to check before buying — seat size, weight capacity, folding and indoor vs. outdoor use.
Think about where it will be used
A wheelchair used mainly indoors can be narrower and lighter, while one used outdoors on uneven ground benefits from larger wheels and a sturdier frame. If you'll be travelling often, a lightweight folding model is usually easier to lift into a car.
Check the seat size and weight capacity
Seat width should allow about 2–3 cm of space on each side of the hips for comfort without being too loose. Always check the stated weight capacity and choose a model with some margin above the user's weight.
Consider who will be pushing it
If a caregiver will usually be pushing, look at handle height and overall weight of the chair. If the user will self-propel, hand-rim size and wheel type matter more.
A quick note on safety
If the choice depends on a specific medical condition, recovery stage or posture need, it's worth checking with a doctor, physiotherapist or occupational therapist before buying.
